Driver, Lender

(or A Fictionalized Biographical Prelude to Adam Driver’s Brief Stint as Shylock on Broadway)

June 18, 2026 - June 21, 2026

Written by Leo Kurland | Directed by David Warshofsky

Adam Driver, famous non-Jewish actor of stage and screen, has been cast as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice on Broadway. Tracing through Driver’s life from his time in the Marines to his acting education at The Juilliard School, Driver, Lender explores all sides of the debate about whether an actor can truthfully and tastefully perform a role in an identity that is not their own. This satirical play blurs fiction and biography to delve deeply into a controversial but potent question in the artistic world.

On an island in the Pacific Northwest, the community gathers to address the disappearance of the local orca pod. Friendships fray, tumors grow, new love blooms, wood is chopped, poems are written. The seasons change. Will the whales ever return? Deep Blue Sound is a meditation on our relationship to our neighbors, ourselves, and the natural world around us.
